Developers to hold public meeting

SUFFOLK - Prospective developers of a 900-acre distribution center will hold a public meeting Sept. 24.

Representatives of CenterPoint Properties will be at Lakeland High School, 215 Kenyon Road, at 6:30 p.m. to present an overview of plans and answer questions.

CenterPoint Properties is seeking the city's approval to develop about 900 acres along the northern side of U.S. Route 58 to develop CenterPoint Intermodal Center. The development would be a collection of distribution centers where goods coming into the ports can be sorted, repackaged and transported throughout the nation. CenterPoint plans to build more than 5 million square feet of distribution, light industrial, heavy industrial and office space at the park.

City officials have said the park would put a strain on traffic on U.S. Route 58, a road that is already in need of an upgrade. The concept will soon come before the Suffolk Planning Commission and then the City Council.
